IN2, University of Exeter
Afit were requested by the University of Exeter to help in the re-design of space within the academic building 'The Egg' (internal pod design feature) involving creation of lecture space, student learning spaces and re-design of resource rooms. Following a brief period of consultation on space planning at the Academic Building it was decided to convert the teaching resource areas within 'The Egg' to two teaching spaces.
Afit were awarded the contract to design and install the required services to achieve the objectives of creating a spacious space that promoted productivity. As the two teaching spaces would be side by side it was important to have the room acoustically sealed to avoid sound contamination. An acoustic wall was constructed to achieve this following design calculations.
Due to the space lacking natural light it was important to select the correct lighting to enhance light levels to establish a bright spacious environment. These levels were achieved using LED light panels set within the Pulse ceiling manufactured by Amsel lighting.
As 'The Egg' is a stand alone structure in the middle of the building it was vitally important to design the building services to give comfort and a light spacious environment as requested by the University. Afit instructed the services of XME Mechanical and Electrical, a leading service contractor sister company. The mechanical design brief was to provide room cooling combined with ventilation systems from external sources. As the space was part of a modern building it was essential to not waste energy, it was therefore decided to install a heat recovery ventilation unit as manufactured by Daikin a high quality manufacturer. This design could limit heat losses through the use of a ventilation system. Furthermore a cooling system was designed to suit the maximum number of students and this was selected from Daikin.
